This activity is for children to identify six basic emotions: happy, sad, angry, scared, surprised, and disgusted. The child first guesses what the emotion is based on the picture on the left, and then checks their answer by scanning in the matching QR code on the right. This is most useful for young children who are learning to identify emotions, and also children with disabilities who have issues identifying emotions. The benefit of using QR codes to hide the correct answer is that it gives the child an opportunity to guess the answer before they are able to see it. This same technique of hiding answers within QR codes can be used in any school work to give students the opportunities to check their answers without giving them the answer immediately.
Standards:
Washington State Early Learning and Development Guideline Ages 4-5 Part 1: Self-Management: Associate emotions with words and facial expressions.
This standard is met through this activity because it helps children practice associating pictures of basic emotions with their labels.
ISTE 5a: Computational Thinker: Students formulate problem definitions suited for technology-assisted methods such as data analysis, abstract models, and algorithmic thinking in exploring and finding solutions.
This standard is met through this activity because the children practice retrieving data and answers from the web through QR codes.
